The Town of North River is a historic community located on the Avalon Peninsula in Conception Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador. It is well-regarded by anglers for its proximity to the North River, a scheduled salmon river noted for its healthy Atlantic salmon populations.
The North River is part of Salmon Fishing Area (SFA) 7 and is a premier destination for recreational fly fishing. Anglers should be aware of the following designations:
• River Classification: The river is classified as a Class 2 river.
• Licensing: To fish here, you must possess a valid Newfoundland and Labrador Inland Salmon Licence.
• Retention Limits: As a Class 2 river, anglers are typically permitted a seasonal retention limit of one salmon.
• Catch and Release: Daily catch-and-release limits are set at three fish.
The recreational salmon season for Newfoundland rivers typically opens on June 1 and closes on September 7. According to the Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) management approach for the 2026 season, the following measures are in place:
• Daily Catch and Release: A limit of three fish applies to all scheduled rivers in Newfoundland.
• Brown Trout Extension: On scheduled salmon rivers like North River, the retention of brown trout is permitted from June 1 to October 7, 2026.
Note: From September 8 to October 7, only brown trout may be retained. A valid salmon licence is still required during this extension period.
North River serves as a central gateway to various fishing spots on the Avalon Peninsula, situated near other major fishing communities such as Clarke’s Beach and Bay Roberts.
Anglers can find necessary gear and licenses at community vendors, including local convenience stores and fishing shops in the surrounding Conception Bay area. For administrative inquiries, the Town Office can be reached at 709-786-6216.
